I own a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. A few days ago I started it up as usual and it it did its usual loading bar. But when the loading bar was finished the screen went black with a little loading symbol. I left it for ages and it still continued. I decided after extensive research to get out the old OS X Snow Leopard install disc and try to boot the computer off that. The Snow Leopard loading screen went for way longer than usual and finally, after about fifteen minutes, it loaded the installer. I selected the language and it went to the 'Select which disc you want to install Mac OS X on' page. But my hard drive wouldn't show up!!!
Mar 03, 2017 If yours is not a retina then it is an easy fix, go find a hard drive or ssd on amazon, new egg or a local tech store (frys, best buy, etc). Use a phillips 00 screw driver to open the macbook, you may need a T6 screw driver to transfer the drive screw mounts to the new drive. Put the new drive in and start the mac using command option R to boot into internet recovery and go from there. Once installed, I went to the APP Store and installed Yosemite. It should only take a minute or two for the drive to be erased and reformatted. Now your drive is ready for OS X. Install OS X. There are two ways you can install OS X on to your external hard disk: by reinstalling OS X from the OS X Utilities repair screen or by downloading OS X.
